The transmission can be from any 7.3 diesel engine (small block gas will not work, big block 460 gas will work with modification I'm not getting into here). Early '95 and previous will be a "5S-42" model. Late 95 to 97 will be a "5S-47" model.

Gear oil is usually around 80 weight, and that's way too heavy for the ZF5 whose lubricant should be around 20 weight. You can use many different fluids, but not 80W90 and similar gear oils.
